Background:
Beyond the long standing active city twinning with Guangzhou, Frankfurt has had good relationships with China. During the autumn of 2007, Frankfurt’s and Beijing’s promotion of economic development agreed to cooperate regarding commercial issues. The state of Hessia and the city of Frankfurt agreed on joint business cooperation with the boom town of Shenzhen in 2006 and with the city of Tianjin in March 2007. In addition, there are numerous contacts with Shanghai: the Goethe University cultivates scientific cooperation with Fudan and Tongji University, the Frankfurt RheinMain Marketing GmbH and the Fraport AG have their China offices here. Together with the Shanghai International Banking and Finance Institute, the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management has a branch office on location.

With about 70 scheduled flights per week, the Frankfurt airport connects Europe with the Middle Kingdom. The network was only recently expanded to include important air connections to Shanghai and Guangzhou, as well as to Shenzhen (in the cargo area). Frankfurt thus assumes a leading position in Europe when it comes to air traffic with China.

In 2005, after several years of successful cooperation, the Frankfurt Fair and the Guangya Exhibition established a joint venture in Frankfurt’s twin city of Guangzhou.

In Frankfurt, approximately 60,000 overnight visitors per year and many times that number of same-day visitors from China provide important commercial impulses and contribute to a mutual understanding.

Today, 6,500 Chinese people live in the Frankfurt am Main area and about 300 Chinese companies have chosen to have their offices here. Official Chinese missions, trade offices, the China Institute and the Confucius Institute are some of the building blocks of a comprehensive structure of the German-Chinese network in the Main metropolis.
